Commercialising Science and Technology-enabled Innovation

Cartezia's Accelerate! technology commercialisation programme now offered at the University of York

Cartezia's Accelerate! programme for commercialising ideas and technology is now offered  at the Department of Computer Science at the University of York.

The specific objectives of Accelerate! at the University of York are:
  • Build a local ecosystem of researchers, entrepreneurs, local SMEs and other service providers connecting a wide range of people and organisations interested in building technology businesses.
  • Create new businesses based on ideas and technology developed within the Departments of Computer Science and Electronics.
  • Further develop existing businesses that have already been created within the department by improving their growth trajectories and prospects.

As part of Accelerate!, Cartezia is performing the following activities:
  • A 2-day workshop, run in November 2010, aimed at providing new knowledge, practical tools and insights relevant to entrepreneurial and commercialisation activities. The workshop will also include a networking dinner and other opportunities to meet and interact with potential investors, business angels and other service providers.
  • Regular seedcamp-style events, run in March 2011 and July 2011, where participants will get an opportunity to interact and network with local technology businesses and entrepreneurs, angel investors, venture capitalists and other service providers all with an interest in creating and building technology businesses.
  • Review of research work done in last 3 years within the Department from a commercialisation perspective and feedback results into new R&D programmes.
  • Identify potential candidates for commercialisation; select a few for active development and perform commercial wrapping and business set up. Follow this up by fund-raising and further development.
  • Review of existing spin-outs from the departments and accelerate their commercialisation.

The Accelerate! programme is run under the auspices of the Departments of Computer Science and Electronics and the Research Innovation Office of the University of York. The Department of Computer Science is one of the leading departments in its field in the UK for teaching and research from where a number of new businesses will emerge through the programme. The Research Innovation Office is supporting Accelerate! in the context of its wider remit to improve the commercialisation of intellectual property in the University of York.
